The Archimedes principle reasons that the amount of water displaced when an object is partially or totally immersed in water, is proportional to the weight of that object. In this case you are the object. Then a formula is used to calculate body fat based on your body density. The problem is finding a hydrostatic weighing tank! This is too sophisticated for most people; but it remains the most accurate.

Does it really matter if you keep track of your body fat? Most people would say its way too much trouble. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to get arm tone and as a result, flabby arms were the thorn in my side for a very long time. I was extremely frustrated and resorted to hiding behind kimono-style tops all the time.

The most frustrating part of the whole arm tone process was ever-changing levels of motivation. No matter how hard I tried, I could not maintain a high level of focus and desire for extended periods of time.

Sometimes the disappointment would be so great that I would jump ship all-together. And a jar of cookies would become my consolation.

One day I had a wake-up call and realized that if I couldn’t figure out a way to stick with a program for the long run, I would never be able to get sexy arms. And I also knew that this motivational “yo yoing” wasn’t sustainable.

As a result, I began searching for a way to maintain motivation and adherence to a program. The answer to my prayers was Dr David Burns MD. He created a method that revolved around the avoidance of cognitive distortions.

So without further ado, here are three distortions you should avoid so that your arm tone motivation never fades:

1. Perfectionism distortions. If you see things as black or white then you have this distortion. For example, if you have to have a perfect workout or no workout at all then you suffer from perfectionism. Don’t sweat the small stuff and always keep moving forward despite minute setbacks. In other words, focus on general patterns of improvement.

2. Over-generalizing distortions. Just because you haven’t been successful today doesn’t mean you can’t be successful tomorrow. You simply haven’t found the right approach. Yet with this distortion, you assume that your past failures will keep on being your future failures. The key here is to keep on trying new things with a fresh outlook.

3. Mental filtering distortion. This distortion is pure evil because it prevents you from giving yourself enough credit, a critical component to success. For example, let’s say you have an entire month of solid workouts but miss one workout due to a last-minute commitment. Instead of giving yourself praise for the awesome month of workouts, you ignore them and beat yourself up for the single missed workout that was entirely out of your control.

Keep the above distortions in mind and make sure you avoid them at all costs. Doing so will allow you to win the mental “arm tone” war. In the end, the person with the highest level of motivation always wins.

More importantly, however, is to develop the habit of rapid action. After all, this information will be useless unless you act on it quickly.
