Noradrenaline, Sauna Therapy, and Depression

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

The sauna has been used by Finns for around a century for its supposed health benefits. As a matter of fact, the use of the sauna is so engrained in the Finnish culture that it has developed in some respects some religious-like undertones with some fairy tales regarding an elf being that lives in all saunas known as “saunatonttu.”

Regardless of the fact that a number of the fact that many of claims of the benefits surrounding sauna use may seem dubious to some, many of the claims are indeed showing some possibilities of merit when finally placed under the scrutinizing looking-glass of the sciences. Some of these sauna health benefits happen to include cardiovascular system benefits, and enhanced blood sugar control. With the prevalence of heart related disease in the United States it is an extremely good piece of news that the nation has started to adopt the practice of sauna bathing.

It may be said that the most important benefit, however, has been that of the mind. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world take prescription medication to help them cope with their depressive symptoms. Perhaps a lot of this medicating would be found unnecessary if they experienced first hand some of the benefits of using the sauna. When an individual sits down in a dry sauna and relaxes for a reasonable amount of time the heat causes their body to activate stress systems, and then when they step out they release large amounts of endorphins.

Endorphins are the feel-good substance that binds with your body’s innate opioid receptors. They numb the sensation of pain, and are ultimately what manage to keep fitness junkies returning to the local health club week after week. These peptides aid in the reduction of feelings of depression. Sauna bathing causes the body to release beta-endorphin in greater volumes than even most ordinary forms of exercise. Maybe this is a good explanation as to why Finns have such a love for it!

Other ways in which sauna bathing may assist in the reduction of various symptoms of depression is through amplification of the release of noradrenaline. Noradrenaline (norepinephrine) is a brain chemical that’s been the target of many drugs for depression as well as a few other conditions. It is also dumped in large volumes during stress from heat, and as a result might suggest that the sauna could be used for similar therapeutic purposes. As mentioned earlier, better insulin control is one benefit of sauna use, and some scientific studies have suggested that this might be one of a few different aspects of depression management as well.

Glad you made it this far. Now that you’re finished with this article, please take just a few moments and sneak a look at: sauna books, and skin aging prevention.

Can You Cure Depression with Chocolate?

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

www.Depression-Hero.com In this series on how to beat depression naturally without antidepressants, I answer the question of whether you can cure depression by eating chocolate. Chocolate is a great mood enhancer and contains stimulant that help you feel more alert and energized . For example, the Theobromine in chocolate leads to increased serotonin, an organic compound associated with decreased levels of depression, tension and fatigue. Chemicals that increase serotonin are also found in antidepressants, like Prozac, which are used to treat depression. The problem is that antidepressants have so many side effects that are often worse than the depression itself. Chocolate also contains phenylethylamine, a stimulant that is also released when you’re with your lover and which also puts you in a great mood. You can get these antidepressant qualities from eating good quality dark chocolate, not the milk chocolate that is filled with sugar and other unhealthy fillers. Although you may feel great for a moment, chocolate does not cure the root cause of depression. If you are depressed and you want a natural cure for depression that does not involve any antidepressants, you have to go deeper. I give you some depression self help homework in each video to help you cure depression if you do the homework honestly and persistently. You can do it. You just need to have your will power and a strong desire to get well. For more videos like this, sign up at http

***VIDEO TRANSCRIPT***CLICK LINK*** encognitive.com This alternative therapy employs vitamins, minerals, and amino acids to create optimum nutritional content for the body, as well as the right environment and equilibrium. Like most alternative medicine techniques, orthomolecular medicine targets a wide range of conditions. [depression, bipolar, adhd, schizophrenia, add, addiction, alcoholism, drug addiction...] Orthomolecular medicine was developed by Linus Pauling, Ph.D., winner of two Nobel prizes, in 1968. It is designed to enable individuals to reach the apex of health and the peak of their performance by utilizing only naturally occurring substances (eg vitamins, minerals, enzymes, trace elements, co-enzymes). The proper balance of these substances in the body is the key to reaching physical, mental, and emotional health and stability. Orthomolecular medicine can be used therapeutically to treat diseases such as cancer and AIDS, or preventatively to impede the progress of degenerative disease and aging. When all is said and done, however, the main objective of orthomolecular medicine is to help the patient reach an optimal level of health; his or her self-esteem will probably improve in the process. Although orthomolecular medicine did not fully develop into a therapy until the late 1960’s when Pauling coined the term “orthomolecular,” the premise behind this practice originated in the 1920’s, when vitamins and minerals were first used to treat illnesses unrelated
