When Losing Weight Becomes and Obsession - Key Facts You Really Should be Aware of

The frequency and regularity with which the fitness industry is churning out weight loss products to help individuals reach their goals of losing the flab is a good indication of this. Where shedding the excess pounds is concerned, the fitness industry has everything you need, whether it’s fitness equipment, weight loss pills or diet programs.
Losing weight for health and fitness is always commendable but there comes a point when it becomes detrimental for your health. Most women know this. You know that you have become too obsessed with your weight when you engage in eating disorders or disordered eating behaviors. Often, these happen when an individual has obviously no excess fat to shed off.
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and bing-eating are the three common disorders experienced by those who are obsessed with food, dieting and weight loss.
Those with anorexia often believe they are fat when in fact they are stick-thin, attesting to a distorted body image of themselves. They can even starve themselves just to ensure that they do not put on that imaginary extra pound.
Bulimia sufferers, on the other hand, also do not want any form of weight gain. However, they allow themselves to eat anything they like but purge themselves afterwards so they don’t put on the fat. They either vomit or take diuretics or laxatives to get rid of all that they had ingested. Binge-Eaters like food and eat lots of it, often when no one is watching because they feel embarrassed and guilty of eating way too much. While they often feel disgusted at themselves, they don’t vomit what they have eaten afterwards.
Disordered eating behaviors, meanwhile, are those that are not as severe as the above-mentioned disorders but only take a little life upheaval to get changed into a full-blown eating disorder. This could include trying out every new diet that comes along, too much emphasis on exercise that missing a day is a cause for depression or infrequent self-induced vomiting after eating.
Here are the red flags that you should heed: 1) When dieting and weight loss has become a recurring thought day and night, 2) When you still insist you are fat when everyone else around you says you’re not, 3) When you don’t eat or shift food around your plate to make it look like you’re consuming them, 4) When your period has stopped for three months or more because you’re putting yourself on an overly restrictive diet and 5) When you fear eating with others. These are danger signs that tell you that you are viewing dieting and weight loss wrongly. It is not anymore good for your health and wellbeing. If you want to address your problem, you have to admit that you have one.
Get help as soon as possible, even if you are still at the disordered eating stage. Treatment options could include support groups, psychological counseling, treatment centers or hospital admission. Make no mistake about it– the road to recovery is going to be tough but it is possible.
